What is Net Zero Energy?

In an effort to reduce the carbon footprint of the construction industry, the Province of British Columbia developed a "Net Zero Energy" program to assist contracting companies and construction businesses in achieving energy efficient buildings.

A Net-Zero Energy building will produce as much clean energy as they consume.  A well built energy efficient home will be 80% more efficient than an average home and uses several technologies to achieve this.

The Province is ultimately working towards all new buildings being net-zero rated by 2023.  In order to accomplish this goal they implemented the Energy Step Code.

BC Energy Step Code

BC introduced energy efficiency as a building code objective in 2008.  Since then, builders and designers have been contributing ways to accomplish these goals, hoping to achieve net-zero energy new buildings by 2023.   The energy step code was developed to offer assurance to governments that new buildings are performing as billed and builders now have a step by step program to follow to accomplish these goals.
